Lessons from Prince of Persia

March 10, 2014

So I remember watching this movie for the first time thinking “Wow, I want my kids to watch this” For a few reasons. 1) It was clean. 2) No language. 3)no sex, only 2 innuendos…in Hollywood standard RIDICULOUSLY a clean movie. As a family we’ve watched it a few times. But just this past Friday my husband and I watched it. I was thinking “Oh, it’s a fun movie”, we had plans that fell through and nothing else was on, so we picked this movie.

I was struck by a few things. First of all the boy who is “adopted” by the King (well, we could go into many analogies about this) wasn’t the boy who stole the apple (maybe most of you knew this, but I just realized it was the boy who saved the boy-thief that was adopted…not that it matters, but he was worthy…and we’re all worthy…but he showed his worth despite his circumstances…you know what I mean). The King knew he was worthy. He stood up for something. For an injustice.

I like to think that I stand for something. Maybe we have seen the facebook posts of people standing up for the boy who was cold or the kid who was being abducted (all faked), but have you thought about what you would do?? I have. I mean, I carry granola bars in my car for homeless people. I do organized service projects. But would I help a person on the street who seemed in distress?

This movie is all about an average, well maybe below average in society standards, person who stands up for what is right and changes the world. He is ONE PERSON. We are one person. What is that famous quote….”One person can’t change everything but you change everything for one person”. His circumstances seem out of control and he’s willing to sacrifice himself to change the world. Wow!

Now comes the hard part. Am I willing to do that? Are you? Who is? I would love to think that I am, but the reality is that maybe I’m not. Maybe I like to do what is comfortable and safe.

I like to think that at 31:20 we hope to change people, to get them out of their comfort zone, in the hopes that they might change the world….at least for one person. And that one person matters.

Matthew 25:34-40 “Then the King will say to those on his right, ‘Come, you who are blessed by my Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world. For I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me drink, I was a stranger and you welcomed me, I was naked and you clothed me, I was sick and you visited me, I was in prison and you came to me.’ Then the righteous will answer him, saying, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you drink? And when did we see you a stranger and welcome you, or naked and clothe you? And when did we see you sick or in prison and visit you?’ And the King will answer them, ‘Truly, I say to you, as you did it to one of the least of these my brothers, you did it to me.’”
